These weekly mindfulness sits offer a dedicated space to practice together while gently exploring themes of death, dying, impermanence, and the appreciation of life. By bringing mindful awareness to these aspects of human experience, we can develop greater clarity, acceptance, and presence in our daily lives.
Although death and dying are often difficult subjects to speak about, mindfulness provides a calm and supportive way to approach them. Rather than turning away from impermanence, we learn to meet it with curiosity, compassion, and awareness. Many practitioners find that reflecting on mortality can deepen gratitude for life and help clarify what truly matters.
What happens during the sessions
Each session includes guided mindfulness practice, periods of silent meditation, and opportunities for gentle reflection. The practices draw on Shinzen Young’s Unified Mindfulness approach, cultivating core skills that support calm, insight, and emotional resilience when facing uncertainty, change, and loss.
Participants are encouraged to explore their own experience with openness and kindness. Both experienced meditators and those newer to mindfulness are warmly welcome.
Why practice mindfulness with themes of death and impermanence?
Mindfulness practice can help us develop a healthier relationship with uncertainty and change. By becoming more aware of the natural cycles of life — including sickness, aging, and death — we often discover a deeper sense of perspective and appreciation.
For many people, this kind of contemplative practice can support:
- Greater acceptance of life’s transitions
- Emotional resilience in times of loss or change
- A deeper appreciation of everyday life
- A more compassionate relationship with ourselves and others
These sessions are not about dwelling on death in a heavy way, but about cultivating wisdom, presence, and openness in the face of life’s impermanent nature.
